Spartan Scholar for the Week of 06.10.2024: Avril Cruz Carrasco, a Senior in our School of Business, Technology and Design, was nominated by Ms. Smith: “Avril comes to school every day and works hard. She works well with her peers. She is always a positive contributor to the classroom environment.” Avril is a member of our Math Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Club here at school. She will be attending Mission College in the Fall, but is undecided on her major. She looks forwarding to exploring different disciplines and then deciding on a career path. Way to go, Avril! You make us proud! For this honor, our scholar will be recognized on the marquee and on the home page of our web site all week. In addition, our scholar has received a special medallion for this distinction. Congratulations to our Spartan Scholar!

Star Staff for the Week of 06.10.2024, as nominated by Mr. Steve List: It is with great privilege that I nominate Mr. Stefan Strong for the Star Staff of the Week. Mr. Strong is a Sylmar graduate, a student at Cal Poly, and an Eagle Scout! The Eagle rank is only earned by approximately 5% of all Scouts across the nation, so that is quite an honor. Mr. Strong maintains our renown Agricultural Learning Center, and he does an amazing job! Keep us the great work, Mr. Strong! We appreciate you!

Sylmar Senior High has once again made the U.S. News & World Report National Rankings. This is the eighth consecutive year in which our school has earned this distinction. For the 2023-2024 school year, 102 Senior Scholars earned the Seal of Biliteracy Honors!  The LAUSD and California Sate Seals of Biliteracy recognize high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing one or more languages in addition to English. Please click on the headline for more information!

The Sylmar Charter High School Science Tech Math Magnet School has been named a National Merit School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. Sylmar Charter High School has been selected to participate in the Amazon Future Engineer Program in partnership with Amazon and Edhesive. Our Advanced Placement Computer Science teacher, Mr. Antonio Nunez, has just received the following notification from the College Board: Congratulations! Your school has earned the College Board's AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for attaining female student representation in AP Computer Science Principles (CSP) for 2019. Out of 20,000 institutions that offer AP courses, 818 have earned the award. Yours is one of only 639 to be recognized for achieving this important result in AP CSP.

Sylmar Charter High School has been awarded the Bronze Safety Seal. The goal of the Employee Safety Seal Program is to help reduce employee injuries while celebrating schools’ commitment to safety. This distinction was earned for the following metrics: (1) No outstanding corrective action notices older than 180 days; (2) The OSHA recordable employee injury rate is at or below the District-Wide rate for fiscal year 2021-22; (3) Provided safety training to all teachers; and (4) Provided monthly safety training of custodial staff.

We understand that children will get sick and need to stay home occasionally. Your student should stay home sick from school or childcare if they have these symptoms: fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or above, cough/congestion. When absences occur, please complete an absence note and turn it in at the school.

In 2012, the Secretary of State launched California’s online voter registration application, which allows schools to provide students with the opportunity to register to vote online. Assembly Bill 113 allows 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote. Pre-registrants are automatically converted to registered voters on their 18th birthday. In March 2017, pre-registration was made available through California’s online voter registration application, further expanding access to pre-registration. Suicide is a serious public health problem that takes an enormous toll on families, students, employees and communities. Suicide prevention involves the collective efforts of families/caregivers, the school community, mental health practitioners, local community organizations, and related professionals to reduce the incidence of suicide through education, awareness, and services. School personnel are instrumental in helping students and their families by identifying students at-risk and linking them to school and community mental health resources.
