Agriculture Courses

Horticulture:  This course emphasizes the numerous specialties in the horticulture field. It includes a study of plants as living organisms, the fundamentals of integrated pest management, and plant growth requirements. An introduction to a variety of plant care techniques is included.
 

Greenhouse and Horticulture Practices (Capstone Course):  Greenhouse Horticulture Practices is designed as our Capstone class in Ornamental Horticulture. Students learn and apply skills in both operating and maintaining environments for correct plant growth. Labs and activities will have an emphasis on different growing mediums, greenhouses, weed control, plant environments, soil mediums, plant growth, plant propagation, planting mediums, plant biology, plus transplanting and merchandising of ornamental plants. In addition, the students will be exposed to floral design, and the safe use of nursery materials, supplies and equipment. Learners will also gain experience through leadership development, lab projects, and career exploration in agriculture.

Floriculture: This course is designed to train students in the skills required in floral shops, nurseries, and department stores selling houseplants, personal flowers, and floral arrangements. Instruction includes floral arrangement, balloon design, and production, as well as care and maintenance of houseplants.

Advanced Floriculture (Capstone Course):  Advanced Floriculture will continue to build upon floral design principles with an increased capacity in business management, advanced floral mechanics/structure, and advanced event planning (e.g. wedding, funeral, banquet, and corporate event).  Students will be able to demonstrate critical thinking and communication skills by interviewing, interpreting, planning, and implementing consumers’ requests with design work that is aesthetically pleasing to that client.
